The Sunday Prayer

Dove of Peace by Pablo Picasso

Father, Mother, God,

Thank you for your presence during the hard and mean days.
For then we have you to lean upon.

Thank you for your presence during the bright and sunny days.
For then we can share that which we have with those who have less.

And thank you for your presence during the Holy Days.
For then we are able to celebrate you and our families and our friends

For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak.

For those who feel unworthy, we ask you to pour your love out in waterfalls of tenderness.

For those who live in pain, we ask you to bathe them in the river of your healing.

For those who are lonely, we ask you to keep them company.

For those who are depressed, we ask you to shower upon them the light of hope.

Dear Creator, You, the borderless sea of substance, we ask you to give to all the world that which we need most.....PEACE.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along th'unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head:
'There is no peace on earth, ' I said
'For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.'

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
'God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men.'

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And amongst other things, a handful of dishcloths...

Following on from yesterday's post, here are more of my recent makes:

A handful of dishcloths!  I really love my knitted and crocheted dishcloths, they seem to work so much better than J-cloths and suchlike.  They last really well, too, and can be tossed in the washing machine regularly to keep them nice and clean.

I do like this scarf.  Variegated yarns make it so easy to create something that looks really special but is quick and simple to make.

And finally, a granny cover for Grandma's old stool!  I've had this lovely "shabby chic" stool for a number of years now, and yes, it did indeed belong to my Grandma.  There are filled-in holes on the seat which suggests it was probably once a chair, but I can only ever remember it as being a stool.  I have never painted or renovated it in any way, as I prefer to leave it in the condition that it came to me in.  It probably sounds a little silly, but looking at it in its "Grandma" condition helps me to remember her so much more clearly :-)

The top is looking a tad worse-for-wear though, and has a few stains on it that aren't particularly attractive, so I decided that a pretty granny circle cover would be just the thing to smarten it up.

Recent-ish projects

At long last ~ I have finally started to write some "proper" posts!  It's been so long since I've blogged that I'm wondering if I have actually forgotten what to do!  Still, practice makes perfect so hopefully you can look forward to more regular posts from now onwards ;-)

 I haven't been entirely idle over the past few months, though, and have a few things to share with you that I've been making.  I made the "fruit snuggly" in the photo above by trial-and-error ~ and now that I'd like to make some more, I seem to have mislaid the instructions I wrote down.  Oh well, I'm sure they will turn up when I do some more tidying!

I was really pleased with how the doily turned out.  I followed a pattern but made this quite some time back, so can't remember if it was in a magazine or one of my crochet books.  Hopefully I will recall where the pattern was from, as I would like to make some more of these as table mats.

 The scarf was knitted using a chunky yarn and the pattern was from one of my books.  I promise to try harder in future to give you all the information on where the patterns are from and what yarn I used!

 This cushion was simply made from granny squares, as you can see.  I used yarn from my stash :-)

This is the back of the cushion.  I don't know if you can see it very well, but I edged it with a bobble shell edging created by Lucy at Attic24

I sent these bits 'n' bobs to a friend to cheer her up a little, as she has had a very trying time of late.

In remembrance...

Fields of Poppies, valley of the Somme, Nord-Picardy (Somme), France by David Hughes

For the Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
